US and Ukraine Move Closer to Landmark Drone Deal

July 18, 2025 by Ian McNabb 1 Comment

Big Plans for Drone Collaboration

The United States and Ukraine are in advanced talks over a new partnership that could change the future of small drones on both sides of the Atlantic. Leaders from both countries are working on a landmark agreement that would see the US investing in Ukraine’s rapidly growing drone industry in exchange for purchases of US weapons, potentially supercharging the domestic production of small military drones that have become a vital weapon across broad fronts in the ongoing conflict.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko discussed the proposed agreement early Friday, “We plan to sign a ‘drone deal’ with the United States. We are discussing investments in the expansion of production of Ukrainian drones by the U.S.,” she said. “That is, we are talking about the purchase of a large batch of Ukrainian drones.” Svyrydenko said that a political decision on the deal had been made by Zelenskiy and President Donald Trump, and that officials were already hashing out the details.

Why This Matters

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s recently reshuffled government has been tasked with improving Ukraine’s relationships with its strategic partners and shoring up its domestic defense capacity. If approved, this deal could further both goals, increasing internal investment while furthering economic ties with the US.

For the United States, the deal represents a chance to gain valuable insights from Ukraine’s experience in wartime drone deployment, especially as American officials worry about falling behind Russia and China in drone technology. Reuters quotes US defense officials saying the initiative “marks a new level of partnership” and could accelerate the modernization of American uncrewed aerial systems.

What Happens Next

Both governments are still working out the final details of the agreement and have promised to hold more meetings over the coming months, with a special investment fund expected to meet before the end of the summer. If the deal goes through, it could mark a major turning point for drone development in Europe and the US, as the US and Ukraine combine resources and knowledge to push military drone development into the future.
