Indonesia Hosts First Multi-Drone UTM Demonstration: A Milestone for Scalable Drone Operations

Pioneering Drone Technology for Southeast Asia

Indonesia recently showcased its first-ever demonstration of multi-drone operations managed through an Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM) platform. The event, held in South Jakarta on January 22–23, 2025, aimed to validate the use of UTM technology for safe and scalable drone operations. This initiative was part of the “Industrial Cooperation Programme in the Global South through Technology Transfer,” supported by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI).

Terra Drone Corporation and its group company Unifly NV, two prominent companies in drone and UTM technology, collaborated to showcase the system’s capabilities. Representatives from ASEAN countries, the Middle East, and over 120 stakeholders, including national aviation authorities and government officials, attended the event.

Unlocking Indonesia’s Drone Potential

Indonesia is rapidly emerging as a key market for drone applications in Southeast Asia. With vast agricultural land, significant oil and gas production, and inter-island logistics needs, the country requires advanced aerial management systems. A robust UTM platform is critical for unlocking drones’ potential in diverse sectors, including agriculture, logistics, and infrastructure inspection.

Demonstration Highlights

The event demonstrated real-time management of multiple drones using UTM technology under various scenarios:

• Agriculture: Showcasing precision spraying for large-scale palm plantations.
• Logistics: Exploring drone delivery solutions for remote and inter-island areas.
• Security & Monitoring: Utilizing drones for infrastructure inspection and emergency response.

Key technologies included drones equipped with Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) and Remote ID systems, which enabled precise and coordinated operations.

A Step Toward Nationwide Drone Integration

As the world’s fourth-largest population and the second-largest potential drone market in Southeast Asia, Indonesia presents immense growth opportunities for drone technologies. The demonstration proved the feasibility of UTM systems in addressing challenges such as airspace congestion and emergency response management.

By validating these critical applications, the initiative aims to pave the way for widespread drone adoption in cities like Jakarta and Nusantara, Indonesia’s new capital. The program aligns with Indonesia’s economic ambitions and strengthens its ties with other Global South nations.
